Electricity reaches 245 Indian villages in first week of February

New Delhi, Feb 8 (IBNS) According to a release on Monday by the central Ministry of Power, 245 villages have been electrified across India during the week Feb 1-7, 2016 under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna (DDUGJY).
Out of these electrified villages, 82 villages are in Assam, 77 in Odisha,  69 in Jharkhand, 13 in Chhattisgarh and 2 each in  Tripura and  Madhya Pradesh.
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to nation, on Independence Day, had said 18,452 villages without power will get electricity connection in 1,000 days.
 
The Government of India has decided to electrify the remaining 18,452 villages within 1000 days i.e. by May 1, 2018.  
 
The release said that the project has been taken on mission mode and strategy for electrification consists of squeezing the implementation schedule to 12 months and also dividing the village electrification process across 12 Stage milestones with defined timelines for monitoring.
 
During 2015-16, till date, 5,027 villages have been electrified. 
 
Out of the remaining 13,425 villages, 10,487 villages are to be electrified through grid; 1,997 villages are to be electrified through off- grid where grid solutions are out of reach due to geographical barriers and 941 villages are to be electrified by the their state governments. 
 
The Gram Vidyut Abhiyanta (GVA) is closely monitoring the progress.
