Mumbai/IBNS: In a major crackdown on poor-quality food ahead of Diwali, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, has suspended 105 food business licences across the state, media reports said.

The enforcement drive was conducted on November 4 and 5, with 28 of the suspended licences belonging to establishments in Mumbai.

Seven food establishments, including three in Pune, have also been ordered to shut down.

Popular food outlets, quick-commerce platforms face action

In Mumbai, eateries such as Biryani By Kilo, Tossin Pizza (Worli) and Jumbo Burger have faced action by the FDA.

Popular quick-commerce platforms, including Zepto (Worli) and Blinkit, have also come under the scanner.

Unsafe food worth Rs 1.35 crore seized

During the operation, the FDA seized suspected unsafe and adulterated food products worth Rs 1.35 crore from 69 food establishments.

The action forms part of the department's efforts to ensure food safety and prevent the sale of substandard or adulterated products during the festive season.

FDA commissioner warns of strict action

FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has warned food business operators against compromising public health and said strict action would be taken against those found violating food safety regulations.

Mundhe also highlighted the legal provisions under which the sale of unsafe food can attract punishment, including life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh.
