India and Myanmar join hands for major military exercise in Chennai: What's RAHAT MITRA all about?

India and Myanmar have launched their maiden bilateral Tri-Services Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise, ‘RAHAT MITRA’, in Chennai on November 5.

The two-day exercise, which concludes on November 6, is being conducted under the theme ‘Together for Humanity, Stronger through Partnership’.

The exercise aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation, foster mutual trust and enhance coordination between the defence forces of the two countries in responding to humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters.

The maiden edition provides a platform for the Indian and Myanmar defence forces to engage in professional exchanges, share operational experiences and improve interoperability in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.

More than 300 personnel from the three services of both countries are participating in the exercise, reflecting their shared commitment to humanitarian cooperation and regional disaster response.

Coordinated under the aegis of the Indian Navy, Exercise RAHAT MITRA marks a significant step towards strengthening defence cooperation and further deepening the longstanding bilateral relationship between India and Myanmar.

The exercise also underscores India's commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and its strategic vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).

It is expected to reinforce the shared resolve of the two nations to promote regional peace and stability while extending humanitarian assistance during times of crisis.
