Curfew imposed in Imphal East

Imphal, Dec 18 (IBNS): Curfew has been imposed in Imphal East district of Manipur after normal life was hit in the area following the strike called on Saturday to protest against the attack on Manipur Police personnel by suspected NSCN(IM) cadres.

Situation worsened after protesters torched at least 20 vehicles, including three buses, at Lamlong Bazar in Imphal.

Curfew has been imposed at Imphal-Ukhrul distirct.

Mobile services have been suspended in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

Nearly 70 suspected militants of NSCN(IM) attacked the two post of Manipur Rifles and 7th Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) of Manipur police in Manipur’s newly created district Noney on Saturday.

The incident took place at Nungkao near Jiribam at around 11 am and the militant group also snatched at least 20 loaded weapons of the security personnel.

It is the fourth attack by suspected NSCN(IM) militants on security personnel in the north eastern Indian state in past 48 hours.

The attack could be in retaliation to the creation of seven new districts by Okram Ibobi Singh led Manipur government.

Following the militant attack, top police and army officials had rushed to the area and launched operation against the attackers.

At least four policemen were killed and eight others injured in three separate attacks laid by NSCN(IM) militants in Chandel, Tengnoupal and Noney district on Dec 15.
