Guwahati, Feb 10 (IBNS) : After publishing the draft of the first part of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), that includes names of 1.90 crore people out of the total 3.29 crore applicants of Assam recognising them as legal citizens of India, the NRC state coordinator office is preparing to publish the next phase draft NRC.

The NRC authorities are all set to start the family tree verification process in the state from February 15.

NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela said that the family tree verification process will cover 47 lakh applicants and will start at all 2500 NRC Seva Kendra (NSKs) in the state from February 15.

“Family tree verification is a method to verify the genuineness of use of legacy data by the applicants. It involves matching of all the family tree details submitted by applicants claiming descendants from the same ancestor,” Hajela said.

The NRC state coordinator said that the family tree verification will be held at all 2500 NSKs and over 3000 state government employees will be engaged in the process.

Hajela further said the documents verification process from house to house by 38 lakh applicants had already completed.

The application process for the NRC update was started in May 2015 and around 6.5 crore documents were received from 68.33 lakh families across the state.

After publishing the first draft of NRC, the rest 1.39 crore applicants are eagerly waiting for the publishing of the next draft

Meanwhile, a top source of NRC state coordinator office said that several doubtful legacy data have been found as some people of Lower Assam district had used Upper Assam and Barak Valley legacy data, while some Upper Assam and Barak valley based people used Lower Assam people’s legacy data.

On the other hand, several organizations of the state have demanded the NRC authorities to conduct the family tree verification process with close monitoring.
