New Delhi, May 5 (IBNS) After 32 years of wait, the Akash missile system will be inducted into the Indian Army on Tuesday.

The missile system is considered to be a proven formidable shield against possible aerial threats from enemy's fighter planes, helicopters, drones and unmanned aerial vehicles up to a maximum range of 25 km and upto an altitude of 20 km.

Akash missile system is a surface-to-air short ranged defence system developed by the Defence Research Development Laboratory.

It can evaluate and track danger and is capable of launching missile on the basis of information obtained by the radar systems.

Akash will be handed over to the Army at a ceremony in Delhi in the presence of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. The Army will be getting two Akash regiments over a period of next two years.
