After bicycles, Mamata gives shoes to primary studentsd

Kolkata, Jan 21 (IBNS) West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has announced on Facebook that she has sanctioned Rs. 154 crore to provide shoes to all primary school students in the state.

Her decision came after she met  some students on Tuesday on her way to Burdwan.

She noticed they were barefoot and immediately told the state education department to do something about it.

She immediately called education minister Partha Chatterjee and asked him to arrange for shoes to primary school students in a week. The state government has been distributing free books to students and recently announced that Madhyamik students would receive free test papers.

On Wednesday the money was sanctioned to provide shoes to every student studying in classes 1 to 4 in the state.

"I was touched to see many of them in barefoot, she wrote. Today our government has sanctioned Rs. 154 crore for distribution of shoes ...Again it proves -- we do what we say,” she said.

Earlier, the state government had distributed bicycles among school students.
