An Indian army helicopter carrying  Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawait and his family members along with other senior officials has crashed near an army training camp at the Wellington Army Centre in Tamil Nadu's Coonoor on Wednesday afternoon. According to sources in the Indian Army, 14 people, including  Major General Bipin Rawat and his family members, were on board the Mi-series (Mi-17V5) chopper that crashed in Nilgiris.

Stalin shocked over Army chopper crash with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin today expressed shock over the crash of an IAF chopper carrying Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and 13 others near Coonoor in Nilgiris district.

Eleven people have been confirmed dead in the incident, according to India Today. NDTV puts toll at 5 with official confirmation.

I have reached here (chopper crash site) on the instructions of the Chief Minister. Out of the 14 people on board, five people have died and the situation of two others is critical. Rescue operation is underway,"  Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Ramachandran was quoted as saying by NDTV.

List of the nine people, including Bipin Rawat, his wife and staff, who flew to Suluk from Delhi by an IAF flight. They boarded the Mi-series copter to Wellington army centre from Suluk. The chopper crash in Nilgiris at around 12:20pm IST. Local sources said three people, who were rescued from the crash site, are undergoing treatment in a Wellington hospital with life-threatening burn injuries (more than 80%).

 

UPDATE AT 33O PM: Rajnath brief PM Modi

11 of the 14 people on board the IAF chopper crashed in Nilgiris have died, according to local sources. Three rescued from the crashed helicopter and shifted to hospital in Wellington. No official confirmation have received yet either on the casualty/fatality figure or the condition of Bipin Rawat. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has briefed PM Modi on Rawat's helicopter crash. Rajnath Singh to brief the parliament on chopper crash shortly before leaving for the accident site in Tamil Nadu: Reports.
