Agnimitra aims to hold show to promote Indian textile

Kolkata, Aug 27 (IBNS) Ace fashion designer Agnimitra Paul, who had given a sartorial makeover to many a Tollywood heroines in the past years when the industry was stepping into a new era of smart production, now sets her eye on something more pain-staking. She plans to promote Indian textile in her next fashion show with the idea of fusion to break away from the staid traditional looks.

Agnimitra, who wants to work on ikkat, baluchari and kotki in her show mostly drawing from Indian fabrics, was talking to IBNS on the sidelines of  ALL (All Ladies League) West Bengal Chapter launch at the Calcutta Club.

Pointing out that she had kept Muslin (the cotton fabric of plain weave which once was known for its delicated handspun yarn) products in the recently opened Biswa Banga store, where both high end and low end fashion wear were kept but all weaved in modern style, Agnimitra reveals she wants to do the same with Baluchari Sarees which is stagnating with the same Indian epic designs depicted for ages with typical color combinations.

"I wish to include Greek, Egyptian, Mexican mythology motifs in the patterns apart from our Ramayana and Mahabharata, I wish to experiment with color combinations. As it is now, Baluchari is only worn as bridal trousseau these days. We can't allow our heritage go like this."

Concurring with Agnimitra, celebrated fashion designer Sharbari Datta says, "Not only in color combination but the pattern of Baluchari has also been stagnating as it is difficult to change the stubborn way of thinking and mindset of our weavers. We need to eveolve."
