Pune court awards death penalty to 65-year-old man convicted in rape, murder of three-year-old girl
A Pune court on Monday sentenced 65-year-old Bhimrao Kamble to capital punishment after he was convicted last week for the rape and murder of a three-year-old girl in Nasrapur.
Special Judge S.R. Salunkhe of the Pune District and Sessions Court held that the case fell under the “rarest of the rare” category and awarded the sentence of “hanging till death,” Hindustan Times reported.
Delivering the verdict, the court observed that the accused had continued to sexually assault the child even after her death.
It also noted that the victim’s body bore 18 injuries, reflecting what the court described as extreme brutality.
The court further remarked that even the death penalty appeared “insufficient” in view of the shocking nature of the offence.
The prosecution concluded the trial in an expedited manner, completing proceedings within just 16 days of filing the chargesheet.
During the hearing, government prosecutors examined more than 55 witnesses and relied on forensic, medical, and circumstantial evidence to establish the case, UNI reported.
