An imam has been arrested in Bangladesh's Mymensingh region after allegations that a minor girl was rape inside his mosque, media reports said.

Locals reportedly beat up the suspect before handing him over to the police.

The victim’s father has filed a case over the incident, Trishal Police chief Monsur Ahamed told bdnews24.

The incident reportedly occurred at a village mosque on Saturday.

The arrested person was identified as 45-year-old Maulana Shahinur Islam.

The victim's family live in a rented house close to the mosque.

Police told the news portal that the child had been attending lessons under the imam at the mosque for around three months.

The victim's mother went to the mosque on Saturday after her girl did not return on time and found the imam in an “objectionable situation” and raised an alarm.

Locals rushed to the mosque and beat up the suspect before handing him over the police.

“I want the highest punishment, including the death penalty, for what he has done to my innocent daughter,” the victim’s mother told bdnews24.
