PM Narendra Modi and Indonesian President lead delegation level talks and signing of MoUs
Jakarta/New Delhi, May 30 (IBNS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on an official tour of several South East Asian countries, is currently visiting Indonesia.
On Wednesday, PM Modi laid a wreath at the Kalibata National Heroes’ Cemetery, in Jakarta in the morning. He also signed the visitor's book.
President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, welcomed Prime Minister Modi, on his arrival at Istana Merdeka, in Jakarta, on Wednesday. The Indian PM was accorded a guard of honour here.
The heads of state then engaged in a short meeting at the Merdeka Palace, media reported.
The two leaders also led delegation-level talks at Istana Merdeka. The two leaders discussed steps to upgrade our relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Nine government to government (G2G) memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were exchanged in the areas of Defence, Space, S&T, Railways, Pharma, Policy Planning & Research and six government to business (G2B0 and business to business (B2B) MoUs, including twinning of Bali and Uttarakhand, were exchanged.
A Statement on Shared Vision of India-Indonesia Maritime Cooperation in the Indo Pacific were also agreed upon during the PM's visit. The document, first with any ASEAN country, outlines areas of maritime cooperation & envisages security architecture in Indo Pacific, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Ravish Kumar said in a tweet on Wednesday.
PM Modi also attended a few cultural programmes on Wednesday, such as unveiling a Ramayana themed joint kite exhibit. Ahmedabad and Jakarta Kite Museums also exchange MoUs.
PM Modi also paid a visit to Istiqlal Mosque, the national mosque of Indonesia and the largest in southeast Asia, in the holy month of Ramadan, in the company of the Indonesian President.
Prime Minister Narendra Modiis on an official visit to the Republic of Indonesia between May 29 and 31, followed by Republic of Singapore between May 31 and June 2, at the invitation of President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, and Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, respectively.
PM Modi will also make a brief stopover in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on May 31, 2018 to meet the newly elected Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohammad.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Prime Minister’s official engagements in Jakarta and Singapore include bilateral meetings with the leadership, delegation level talks, meetings with the business and Indian communities.
In Singapore, Prime Minister will also deliver the key-note address at the 17th Shangri-la Dialogue.
Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, three countries in ASEAN, are Strategic Partners of India.
According to the External Affairs ministry, the Central government attaches high importance to its relations with the ASEAN region and is committed to deepening its relationship with individual ASEAN member states, within the framework of the government’s Act East Policy.
