PM Narendra Modi begins official engagements in Rome

Rome/New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday began his official engagements in Rome ahead of the G20 Summit, with a productive interaction with Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

The two sides discussed ways to enhance economic as well as people-to-people linkages aimed at creating a better planet.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister’s Office said: “Official engagements in Rome begin with a productive interaction with @eucopresident Charles Michel and @vonderleyen, President of the @EU_Commission.

“The leaders discussed ways to enhance economic as well as people-to-people linkages aimed at creating a better planet.”

The Prime Minister is to offer floral tributes to a statue of Mahatma Gandhi later in the day. In the evening he will hold a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, after which he will interact with the Indian community in Rome.

Earlier in the morning, the Prime Minister arrived in Rome, Italy, to attend the 16th G20 Leaders’ Summit.

“Landed in Rome to take part in the @g20org Summit, an important forum to deliberate on key global issues. I also look forward to other programmes through this visit to Rome,” the PM tweeted on arrival.

He was received by senior officials of the Government of Italy and the Ambassador of India in Italy Neena Malhotra.

The G20 is the first in-person Summit of the grouping since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.

His visit, from Oct 29-31, at the invitation of the Italian Prime Minister. He will later travel to Glasgow, United Kingdom, from Nov 1-2 at the invitation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, for the COP26 summit.
