New Delhi, July 3 (IBNS): Ending days of suspense and anxiety, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday formally submitted his resignation as the Congress president, weeks after his party once again received a jolt in the Lok Sabha polls.

He also shared the resignation letter on his Twitter page.

Rahul Gandhi, who became the Congress president in 2017, took responsibility for his party's defeat in the Lok Sabha polls and said he would continue to fight the ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He said the Congress Working Committee should elect a new party president.

In a tweet where he shared his resignation letter, Gandhi said: "It is an honour for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. I owe the country and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love.
Jai Hind ."

Congress workers have been insisting him to review his decision and continue as the President.

Meanwhile, a new Congress president will be chosen "within a week", party sources have told NDTV.

In the Lok Sabha polls, The Bharatiya Janata Party once again defeated the Congress to form the government at the Centre for the second consecutive term.
