Assam panchayat election dates declared, persons with more than two children and no toilet can’t contest

Guwahati, Nov 6 (IBNS) : The Assam State Election Commission on Monday  declared the dates for Assam panchayat elections, saying   those having more than two children will not be eligible to contest.

This apart, the candidates must have passed at least class six and have a toilet at home.

The pnaanchayat polls in Assam will be held in two phases on December 5 and December 9 in 23,505 polling booths across 26 districts.

The results will be declared by December 12.

More than, 1.56 crore voters will exercise their voting rights. The number of voters this time has increased by  21.49 per cent compared to the previous panchayat poll.

Announcing the poll notification at a press conference held in Guwahati, State Election Commissioner H. N. Bora said  the Assam Panchayat (Constitution) (Amendment) Rules, 2018 will be applicable in this election.

According to the notification, candidates who have more than two living children from a single or multiple partners will be disqualified from contesting the panchayat election.

The required  educational qualification for contesting village panchayat polls stipulates that  candidates from general category must have passed Class VI examination while there is no minimum benchmark  for persons from SC, ST, OBC and MOBC category.

On the other hand, candidates from general category must have  passed Class 10 examination to be eligible to contest  for Anchalik panchayat election while education up to class eight is required for the village panchayat president and persons from SC, ST, OBC and MOBC category.

Candidates from general category must have  passed Class 12 examination to be eligible as Zila Parishad members  and persons from SC, ST, OBC and MOBC category must have passed Class 10.
