Kolkata pianist Avik Ganguly unveils new album ‘My Black and White Affair’; Here’s what makes it special

Released on August 9, 2026, the eight-track album represents a significant new creative chapter for the versatile Kolkata instrumentalist.

Blending genre-crossing arrangements with cinematic musical storytelling, My Black and White Affair gives every composition its own narrative and emotional identity.

The album is built around Ganguly’s relationship with the piano while extending beyond conventional solo-piano writing into a broader instrumental landscape.

Audiences also know Ganguly for his energetic stage presence as a keyboardist with The ARC Project and several live setups. His career as a solo concert pianist entered a new phase in 2025 when he successfully auditioned for Fever’s Candlelight Concerts. He subsequently became a regular Candlelight pianist, presenting solo-piano programmes at intimate venues across Kolkata.

The same artistic independence informs My Black and White Affair. Anchored by Ganguly’s signature piano playing, the album moves across an unusually broad stylistic spectrum. Grand orchestral soundscapes, which have long been central to his compositional style, sit alongside synth-pop textures, funk-influenced grooves and serene devotional themes. Despite these shifts in mood and genre, the album remains entirely instrumental and unified by its emphasis on storytelling.

“I don’t want to be a composer without creative freedom. That is why I continue releasing my original music. For me, instrumental music is about pure storytelling. It allows me to explore different genres, sit at my grand piano, improvise, compose and enjoy every moment of the creative process,” says Ganguly.

To give the album’s layered arrangements their full musical character, Ganguly collaborated with session musicians Surjo Bhattacharjee on guitars, Aniket Dutta on drums and Soumyajyoti Ghosh on flute. Sanjay Ghosh of Studio Resonance handled the mixing and mastering of the eight tracks. The album's opening track features Abesh Ganguly as co-composer.

Following the album’s release, Ganguly is preparing to launch an ambitious live initiative titled 'Tunes and Stories by Avik Ganguly'. Expected to debut in Kolkata within the coming months, the curated solo concert series will bring his original cinematic compositions together with sophisticated piano arrangements of recognised standards.

The programme is designed as an immersive musical journey in which Ganguly introduces the stories and personal inspirations connected with each performance. Original themes will be presented alongside piano-led interpretations drawn from Bollywood music, Western classical repertoire and English pop standards.

Rather than treating storytelling as an addition to the concert, Tunes and Stories places it at the centre of the experience. Each composition or arrangement will be introduced through the idea, memory or emotion behind it, giving audiences a closer understanding of how Ganguly approaches music as both composer and performer.

Alongside his forthcoming concert production, Ganguly continues to perform at corporate events, curated musical evenings, instrumental-piano nights and private celebrations.

His work as a wedding pianist and corporate pianist has also made him a sought-after performer for luxury-brand events and specially designed musical experiences.

For Ganguly, these different areas of performance remain connected by a straightforward purpose.

“Music has given me so much, and I simply want to serve music through my original compositions and live playing,” he says.
