‘We are carrying a legacy’: Iman Chakraborty’s Parampara brings over 150 young musicians together

Kolkata/IBNS: Bengali folk and Rabindra Sangeet singer Iman Chakraborty’s Iman Sangeet Academy hosted its annual showcase, Parampara, on Friday, bringing together more than 150 students from Kolkata, and different parts of India and overseas.

The programme featured students from the academy's online and offline classes, including those learning vocal music and musical instruments. Students from Australia, Mumbai, the United Kingdom and other parts of India and West Bengal participated in the event.

Singer and founder of Iman Sangeet Academy, Iman Chakraborty said, "This school was started by my mother, it's her dream place. I could never be so busy that I can't come or ignore this place. Moreover I'm very grateful to Nilanjan (Nilanjan Ghosh, Iman's husband), that he came forward and supported me in this. We've gone through a lot of circumstances, so this program wouldn't be possible if he was not here."

The students were involved in organising and conducting various aspects of the programme, including anchoring, volunteering, backstage management, writing, scheduling and coordination. The showcase also included a cultural dance performance by a group of specially abled children.

"New students who are starting today, as a teacher I think we need to support them. Listen to their songs first. That's why we are struggling so much. We are doing this as if we are carrying a legacy," Chakraborty added.

The annual showcase was designed to provide students with an experience of performing in a professional stage environment. The event was attended by music composer Indraadip Das Gupta, among other guests.

"We want students to have a professional programme, so that the audience doesn't feel that they've come to a children's programme. They'll have a totally entertaining programme. The students are arranging everything here", said Nilanjan Ghosh, director of Iman Sangeet Academy.

The programme also focused on encouraging young musicians and providing them with opportunities to perform before an audience. The organisers highlighted the importance of supporting emerging artists and giving new performers a platform to showcase their work.
