Open AI has named former Twitch CEO and co-founder Emmett Shear as the company's interim CEO, media reports said.

If media reports are to be believed then former CEO Sam Altman will not return to the company which created ChatGPT bot.

Emmett Shear, the co-founder of Twitch, a popular video game streaming platform Amazon acquired in 2014, will be named the company’s interim CEO, replacing Mira Murati, who was named interim CEO in a management reshuffle Friday, a person familiar with the development told The Washington Post.

Shear’s surprise appointment comes after OpenAI’s four-person board refused to step down and let Altman return, sources told The Verge.

Open AI on Friday (November 17, 2023) sacked CEO Sam Altman, prompting the co-founder Greg Brockman to quit soon after.

The company said in a statement: "Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI."

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Sam Altman and Greg Brockman will join his company to lead a new advanced AI research team.

Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reacted to the development and posted on X: "We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them. And we’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success."

Who is Emmett Shear?

Shear is an American internet entrepreneur, and investor.

He served as a part-time partner at venture capital firm Y Combinator.

He became the CEO of Twitch in 2011.

E-commerce major Amazon acquired it for nearly $1 billion in 2014.

Shear quit Twitch in March 2023.

Before his professional career started, Shear received a Bachelor of Science with a major in computer science from Yale University in 2005.
