Kyiv:   Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has been hailed as a symbol of resistance against the Russian invasion by the Western powers, is currently facing social media trolls after he posed for a photoshoot for the iconic Vogue magazine with his wife and First Lady Olena Zelenska.

Zelenskyy's tactics and way of dealing with the war was appreciated internationally, especially by the USA and other European countries.

A large number of Ukrainians were killed and many displaced since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a military strike on Ukraine in February.

However, the Ukrainian President is now facing the heat after appearing in the photoshoot which has now gone viral online.

The photographs were shot by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.

In the images, which appeared in Vogue, the couple could be seen holding hands across a table or even sharing a warm embrace, triggering criticisms.

The First Lady was also seen in a picture clicked in front of tankers with soldiers around her. Many, however, see it as a height of insensitivity amid the gravity of a deadly war.

Olena Zelenska shared the images on her social media handles and wrote: "To be on the @voguemagazine cover is a great honor and dream of many successful and prominent people of the world. The only thing I wish for all of them is that it is not because of war in their countries."

"And now I would like you to see every Ukrainian woman here, in my place. Who fights, volunteers, settles in a refugee camp, does her job under the sound of a siren, holds on under the occupation. She has the right and deserves to be on the covers of the whole world. Each of you, fellow Ukrainian women, is now the face and cover of our country," she said.

Online users expressed their shock and amazement over the images.

One Hana tweeted: "I can’t believe Zelenskyy is doing Vogue photoshoots while russia is bombing his country this is so…unserious."

Another user Mike Ciandella wrote: "People forget about major world events annoyingly fast. I’m not sure that doing a Vogue photo shoot was the best way to remedy that, but I get why Zelenskyy would do it."
