UK PM race: Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss advance to runoff to succeed Boris Johnson
London/IBNS: Indian-origin former UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss are the final two candidates in the race to replace Boris Johnson as the Prime Minister of the country.
Sunak's Conservative Party colleagues voted overwhelmingly in his favour with 137 votes in the final round Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Truss, with 113 votes leapfrogged trade minister Penny Mordaunt (105 votes) to reach the runoff round.
As per the election schedule, Boris Johnson's successor as Conservative leader is meant to be announced on Sept 5.
Rishi Sunak was elected as Conservative MP for Richmond (Yorks) in 2015, which marked his entry into politics.
The 42-year-old Indian-origin leader got a full cabinet role for the first time when he was picked up by Boris Johnson as Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020.
Sunak was also fined for defying Covid-19 lockdown protocols and attending a 10, Downing Street gathering.
