Sydney/UNI: Several beaches in Sydney were closed on Thursday after a swimmer was mauled to death by a shark.

The 35-year-old male swimmer succumbed to his injuries after he was attacked by a three-meter long white shark at Little Bay on Wednesday.

"Based on footage provided by the public, including eyewitness accounts, DPI shark biologists believe that a white shark, at least three metres in length, was likely responsible," the Department of Primary Industries said in a statement on Thursday.

According to The Guardian, the swimmers have been warned not to enter the water at 13 Sydney beaches from Bondi in the east to Cronulla in the south. The DPI has deployed six Smart drumlines from Little Bay Beach to Long Bay.

Several beaches including Bronte, Tamarama, Bondi, Coogee, Clovelly, South Maroubra, Little Bay, Malabar/Long Bay, La Perouse, Wanda, Elouera, north Cronulla and Cronulla have been closed since the attack.

According to Randwick council, surf lifesavers were using drones and jetskis to check the surrounding area for further shark sightings on Thursday.
