London Tube explosion: 22 injured, police calls it 'terror incident'

London, Sept 15 (IBNS): At least 22 people were injured as an explosion rocked a tube train in south-west London on Friday morning, officials said.

The explosion occurred in a small white bucket which was present inside the train.

Meanwhile, the police have declared the incident as a 'terrorist attack'.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the senior national coordinator for CT policing, has declared it as a terrorist incident, read the Metropolitan Police website.

Officers from the Met and British Transport Police attended the scene, along with colleagues from the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.

It is too early to confirm the cause of the fire, which will be subject to the investigation that is now underway by the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, read the Metropolitan Police website.

The station remains cordoned off and we are advising people to avoid the area.

Several images of the explosion in the tube rail showed that a white bucket is on fire inside a supermarket bag, with wires trailing on to the carriage floor.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the incident.

"The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the explosion on a train at Parsons Green Station this morning is being treated as terrorism. Our city utterly condemns the hideous individuals who attempt to use terror to harm us and destroy our way of life," Khan said in a Facebook post.

"As London has proven again and again, we will never be intimidated or defeated by terrorism," he said.

He said: "I am in close contact with the Metropolitan Police Service, Transport for London, Government and other emergency services who are responding at the scene and leading the investigation. I will be attending the emergency COBRA meeting in Whitehall this afternoon with the Prime Minister. My sincere gratitude goes to all our courageous emergency responders and the TfL staff who were first on the scene."
