New Delhi: India and Canada discussed strengthening cooperation in the fertiliser and natural resources sectors during a meeting between Union Minister J.P. Nadda and Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Tim Hodgson on Thursday.

Nadda said improving access to potash remains critical for restoring soil fertility and promoting balanced fertiliser use under India’s Integrated Nutrient Management framework.

India currently imports about 25 per cent of its muriate of potash (MOP) requirement from Canada, making it one of India’s most important suppliers.

Nadda also highlighted Gujarat State Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd’s investment of CAD 49.68 million in Karnalyte Resources Inc., a Canadian potash developer.

GSFC holds a 47.73 per cent stake in the project, giving India a strategic presence in overseas potash assets.

Hodgson reaffirming Canada’s commitment described potash as a critical mineral for food security and said Canada is working to create a more investor-friendly environment.

He added that investments by Indian companies in Canada’s natural resources sector would receive matching support from the Canadian government.

The two sides also discussed India’s long-term strategy to secure potash supplies, including technical cooperation in mining and exploration, as well as the possibility of expanding long-term supply contracts with Canada.
