'If Modi is the leader and India is attacked, we'll be there': Trump's strong assurance at G7

US President Donald Trump offered a strong public endorsement of India during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit in France, stating that Washington would support New Delhi if the country faced an external attack while Modi remained in office.

The remarks came after bilateral discussions between the two leaders, during which they reviewed trade, economic cooperation and regional security issues.

Speaking to reporters following his meeting with the Prime Minister, Trump described the discussions as productive and reaffirmed the close relationship between the United States and India.

“If Modi is the leader and India is attacked, we will be there to help them,” Trump said.

The US President then appeared to refer directly to the Indian Prime Minister, adding, “If anybody attacks that man, we're going to be there.”

In a lighter moment, Trump remarked, “Now, if there's a new leader, I'm not sure...”

The comments are expected to draw attention in New Delhi, where India and the United States have steadily expanded strategic cooperation amid evolving geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific region.

Bilateral talks focus on trade, security

Trump and Modi met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit for discussions covering a range of issues, including trade relations, economic partnerships and regional security.

The meeting came at a time when both countries are working to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors while addressing outstanding trade concerns.

India and the United States have continued discussions on market access, tariffs and supply-chain resilience, alongside efforts to deepen collaboration in defence, technology and energy.

'A tough trader'

During his interaction with reporters, Trump also commended Modi’s approach to trade negotiations, describing the Indian Prime Minister as a formidable negotiator.

“He's a tough trader,” Trump said while referring to ongoing trade discussions between Washington and New Delhi.

The US President’s remarks highlighted the significance of trade negotiations as both countries seek to expand economic engagement while managing areas of disagreement.

Strategic partnership remains in focus

The latest interaction between Trump and Modi underscored the growing importance of the India-US strategic partnership, particularly in the context of regional security and economic cooperation.

With both nations playing increasingly influential roles in the Indo-Pacific, bilateral engagement continues to focus on strengthening defence ties, boosting investment, enhancing technology cooperation and maintaining stability across key maritime regions.

Trump’s comments at the G7 Summit added a new dimension to the discussions, signalling America's continued support for India as the two countries pursue broader strategic and economic objectives.
