Barcelona, Mar 24 (IBNS): Following orders from the Spanish Supreme Court in Madrid, police detained five Catalan separatist leaders, triggering a clash with protesters in the regional capital, Barcelona, late on Friday night.

More than 20 people sustained injuries.

According to reports, the detained leaders, including Jordi Turull, have been charged with rebellion.

Turull, the former Catalan government spokesman, is also a hopeful candidate for regional president.

The others detainees have been identified as Josep Rull, Raul Romeva, Dolors Bassa and Carme Forcadell.

Their detention have jeopardised a second vote in the Catalan parliament, which was planned for Saturday.

So far, 25 separatist leaders have been charged by the Spanish government.

Spain has also reactivated a European arrest warrant for former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, who called the nation 'undemocratic' and 'shame for Europe'.

Puigdemont is presently in Belgium.
