Barcelona van attacker shot dead by police

Barcelona, Aug 22 (IBNS): The prime suspect in Barcelona attack which claimed at least 13 lives and injured 100 others, has been shot dead by police, reports said.

Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, is presumed to be the driver of the van which drove over pedestrians in Las Ramblas, either killing or injuring them.

He was shot dead 25 miles (40km) west of Barcelona, near a sewage treatment plant, following a tip-off.

Police said that the attacker was wearing a fake explosive belt and shouted Allahu Akbar, when police confronted him.

Following the strike, bomb disposal officers used a robot to detect the belt and found it out to be fake.

Local witnesses were quoted in the media as saying that some 20 police cars had headed to the area to take on Abouyaaqoub.

Earlier, police had shot dead five attackers and thwarted a second attack from taking place, in Cambrils.

The slain terrorists have been identified as Said Aallaa, 18, Moussa Oukabir, 18, Houssaine Abouyaaqoub, 19, Omar Hychami, 21 and Mohamed Hychami, 24.

Four others were also arrested.

They have been identified as Driss Oukabir, 28, Mohamed Houli Chemlal, Salah al-Karib, 34, and Mohammed Aallaa, 27.

Meanwhile, the imam who had come under scanner for allegedly radicalising the youth, has reportedly died in an accidental explosion near Alcanar.

Police added that the apartment where the explosion took place was used as a bomb making factory.
