Kolkata/IBNS: In a significant move to modernise public transport, the Transport Department of West Bengal, in collaboration with the Information Technology and Electronics (IT&E) Department, has launched digital bus ticket booking through the ‘Yatri Sathi App’.

Initially available on 12 pilot routes connecting the airport, this service will soon expand to cover the entire West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) network in Kolkata.

The new feature offers commuters a seamless, cashless ticketing option, enhancing convenience and efficiency for daily travel.

The digital ticketing system enables users to book bus tickets by selecting their preferred route or destination, eliminating the need for cash transactions.

This innovation reduces bus crowding and simplifies payments, fostering digital adoption and marking a key step in the city's transition to smart mobility.

With this initiative, Kolkata joins other Indian cities utilising technology to improve public transportation.

Highlighting the significance of the new service, West Bengal transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty said, "The launch of digital ticketing through Yatri Sathi is a game-changer for public transport in Kolkata, underscoring our commitment to improving accessibility and simplifying travel."
WB transport department's secretary Saumitra Mohan said, "This collaboration with Yatri Sathi is a crucial step in Kolkata’s journey towards becoming a truly smart city."
"Expanding this service will make commuting easier, safer, and more efficient for millions of passengers," Mohan added.
Since its inception, Yatri Sathi has been revolutionising mobility in Kolkata, connecting over 70,000 drivers and serving 2.7 million users with more than 6 million trips.

By offering zero-commission, direct-to-driver cab rides, the app empowers drivers while providing affordable options for passengers.
With the addition of bus ticketing, Yatri Sathi extends its convenience to public transport, further enhancing the commuting experience for Kolkata’s residents.
The service is set to expand to cities such as Siliguri, Durgapur, and Asansol, benefiting more citizens across the state.

Looking ahead, Yatri Sathi plans to integrate features like real-time bus tracking, journey planning, and multi-modal transport solutions, allowing commuters to better plan their trips while improving first- and last-mile connectivity.
The app’s vision is to become a citizen-centric platform that not only supports public transportation but also offers a variety of services for the people of West Bengal, driving digital adoption and fostering a more connected future for commuters.
