Tata Group-owned Air India has been ranked the fourth most on-time airline in the world in June 2026 by aviation analytics firm Cirium, highlighting the airline’s continued progress in improving operational reliability and schedule performance.

According to Cirium’s June 2026 On-Time Performance Report, Air India achieved an on-time arrival rate of 86.85% across 15,135 tracked flights during the month. The airline also recorded an on-time departure rate of 86.23% and a completion factor of 99.7%, indicating that nearly all scheduled flights operated successfully.

The ranking reflects Air India’s sustained efforts to strengthen operational efficiency through improved network planning, enhanced execution, and greater resilience across its domestic and international operations.

Operating a complex hub-and-spoke network through India’s two largest aviation hubs — Delhi and Mumbai — Air India manages thousands of connections daily. Operations at these busy airports can often be affected by congestion, air traffic control restrictions, weather disruptions, and other external factors that can create a ripple effect across the airline’s network.

To improve reliability, Air India has implemented several initiatives focused on strengthening punctuality and enhancing the passenger experience. These include improving departure performance, streamlining aircraft turnaround times, strengthening real-time network monitoring, and enabling faster operational decision-making.

The airline has also enhanced its ability to manage disruptions through stronger contingency planning, improved coordination between teams, and greater operational flexibility. These measures help minimise delays caused by unforeseen events such as weather conditions, airspace restrictions, airport congestion, or technical challenges.

Air India’s improved operational performance comes as part of its wider transformation programme, which includes fleet modernisation, customer experience upgrades, digital innovation, and expansion of its global connectivity through an enhanced hub-and-spoke model.

Major Fleet Modernisation Underway

As part of its transformation strategy, Air India is undertaking one of the world’s largest fleet renewal programmes, with orders placed for 600 new Airbus and Boeing aircraft while simultaneously upgrading its existing fleet.

The airline has inducted three new Boeing 787-9 aircraft in the past six months, with additional Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A350-1000 aircraft expected to join the fleet later in 2026.

Alongside new aircraft additions, Air India is also progressing with the refurbishment of its existing widebody fleet. Two of its 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft featuring fully refreshed interiors have already returned to service, while three more aircraft are currently undergoing upgrades in the United States.

By the end of 2026, more than 50% of Air India’s widebody fleet is expected to feature new or upgraded interiors, significantly improving the passenger experience across its long-haul international network.
