English comedian Rik Mayall passes away

London, June 9 (IBNS): English comedian, writer and actor Richard Michael, who was better known as Rik Mayall breathed his last on Monday.

He was 56.

Mayall is best known for his comedy partnership with Adrian Edmondson, his over-the-top and energetic portrayal of characters.

He was a pioneer of alternative comedy in the early 1980s.

He appeared in numerous sitcoms including 'The Young Ones', 'Blackadder', 'The New Statesman', and 'Bottom'.

His big screen appearance in comedy films include 'Drop Dead Fred' and 'Guest House Paradiso'.

Expressing shock, comedian and actor David Walliams tweeted: "I am heartbroken that my comedy idol growing up Rik Mayall has died. He made me want to be a comedian..."

English surrealist, comedian and actor Noel Fielding posted: "Growing up there was no one funnier ! We will really miss you Rik Mayall you genius x."

English satirist and broadcaster Charlie Brooker tweeted: "Rik Mayall was just pure wiry, energetic, unpredictable humour poured into the shape of a human. You couldn't not watch him."

Expressing dismay, Irish television comedy writer and director  Graham Linehan tweeted: "Ah, dammit, I just heard the news. Mayall was one of the funniest people who ever lived. Fuck everything."

Irish actor and comedian Chris O' Dowd tweeted: "Very sad to hear about Rik Mayall's passing. 'Bottom' was a huge part of my youth. Even his single tweet was funny."
