Singapore extends Ex-President Sri Lankan Gotabaya Rajapaksa's visit pass by 14 days

Singapore: The Singapore government has granted another stay of 14 days to former Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa who fled the Island Nation earlier this month.

Gotabaya left the nation at a time when Sri Lanka was witnessing massive protests over the issue of economic crisis.

Singapore's The Straits Times reported that his short-term visit pass, which was issued when he arrived here on a private visit two weeks ago, has been extended by another 14 days.

The development occurred amid reports that the former Sri Lankan president might soon return to his country.

Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will return to the country from Singapore, Cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunewardena told Daily Mirror.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa left Sri Lanka on July 13 for Maldives and then reached Singapore.

He submitted his resignation after arriving in the country.

The Sri Lankan Cabinet accepted his resignation on July 15.

Sri Lankans blame his administration for the economic crisis the nation is facing.

The Island Nation is facing daily power cuts and shortages of basics like fuel, food and medicines for several months now.

Sri Lankan lawmakers recently elected Ranil Wickremesinghe as the President.

He was also working as acting President of the country after Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled.
