Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu received a jolt when pro-Indian key opposition party Maldives Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate Adam Azim won the crucial mayoral elections of Male.

The key development in the political paradigm of the country occurred amid an ongoing diplomatic row between India and Maldives over remarks made by certain ministers against Narendra Modi over his recent visit to Lakshadweep, a Union Territory that is perceived as a potential tourism rival to Maldives.

According to reports, Adam Azim emerged victorious by securing 44 percent of the votes.
