Pakistan Interior Minister warns PDM against turning rally into sit-in

Islamabad: Pakistan's Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has warned the opposition parties are allowed to hold a public gathering in Islamabad “but if anyone tries to stage a sit-in he will crush it”.

His statement comes as joint opposition alliance, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), is all set to stage its counter-power show tomorrow (Monday), a day after the ruling PTI held its ‘historic’ rally titled “Amr Bil Maroof” at Parade Ground in the federal capital, The Express Tribune reported.

The caravans of constituent parties of the PDM – mainly comprising Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) – are converging on Islamabad, the newspaper reported.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Rashid said JUI-F was given permission to hold a rally in the federal capital and added that he had requested the opposition parties not to change the venue or the nature of their public gathering.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan on Sunday said foreign powers were involved in the ‘conspiracy’ to send his coalition government at the Centre packing through a no-confidence motion tabled by the country’s joint opposition.

While addressing a rally in Islamabad ahead of the  no-trust voting, PM Imran said foreign elements are using local politicians and using money to “mend the country’s foreign policy”.

“I rarely write my speeches… but I wrote this speech today so that I don’t get emotional and say anything which can affect our foreign policy,” Khan was quoted as saying by The Express Tribune.
