Dhaka, Feb 20 (IBNS): Days after BNP supremo Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, the former PM on Tuesday filed an appeal challenging the verdict in the lower court, media reports said.

In the 1,222-page appeal, Khaleda prayed to the High Court to acquit her of the corruption charge and grant her bail in the case, advocate Sagir Hossain Leon, a lawyer for the BNP chief, told The Daily Star.

The High Court has fixed Feb 22 as the date for hearing  on whether it will accept Zia's appeal.

The bail plea of the leader will be heard by the bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was on Feb 8 sentenced to five years in jail as a Bangladesh court convicted her in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, reports said.

Her son Tarique Rahman and four others got 10 years' jail term in connection with the same case.

Zia  was found guilty of embezzlement of  252,000 Dollars from a trust created for an orphanage in the name of her late husband and Bangladesh's former President Ziaur Rahman.
