Afghanistan: Taliban's refugee minister Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani dies in Kabul blast

Afghanistan's Taliban-led regime's acting minister for refugees, Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, died in a suicide attack that targeted his Ministry's headquarters in Kabul city on Wednesday.

Afghanistan's Khaama Press reported that the blast occurred when the Taliban leader was on his way to a mosque.

Authorities have started investigating the incident.

No group or individual claimed responsibility for the incident.

Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani was appointed as Minister in Taliban's interim regime after it seized power in Kabul following the fall of the former government in 2021.

The former government was toppled after foreign forces left Afghanistan.

Khalil serves as a key leader of the Haqqani Network (HQN), read the US State Department's website.

On February 9, 2011, the U.S. Department of the Treasury designated Khalil Haqqani as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

The Department offered a $ 5 million reward for information leading to his arrest.

According to the US Department of Treasury,  the Haqqani Network is a Taliban-affiliated militant group operating from Pakistan.

"At the forefront of insurgent activity in Afghanistan, the Haqqani Network was founded by Khalil Haqqani’s brother, Jalaluddin Haqqani, who joined Mullah Omar’s Taliban regime in the mid-1990s. Jalaluddin Haqqani was designated by the UN 1267 Committee in January 2001," reads the website.
