Oscar-winning actress Sophia Loren has undergone emergency surgery after falling in the bathroom of her Swiss residence.

A representative for the actress, 89, confirmed to PEOPLE on Monday that the incident happened Sunday in the bathroom of her home in Geneva and that she suffered several fractures, including to her femur and hip.

The representative said that they are optimistic about Loren's recovery following her surgery.

"Today, a fall at her home in Geneva caused Mrs. Loren to suffer hip fractures. Having undergone surgery successfully, you will now have to observe a short period of convalescence followed by a rehabilitation process. Fortunately everything went well and the Lady will be back with us very soon," read an English translation of the Instagram post on the official page of her restaurant.

At the start of the 1980s, Loren chose to make rarer film appearances.

Since then, she has appeared in films such as Prêt-à-porter (1994), Grumpier Old Men (1995), Nine (2009), and The Life Ahead (2020).

Loren's performance as Cesira in the film Two Women (1961) directed by Vittorio De Sica won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the first actor to win an Oscar for a non-English-language performance.
