Hollywood actor Russell Brand denies accusations of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse

Popular comic and actor Russell Brand has been accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse of four women between 2006 and 2013.

The allegations were made against the actor in a joint investigation by the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4's Dispatches.

During the years covered by the allegations, Brand had various high-profile jobs at different times, including at BBC Radio 2 and Channel 4, and as an actor in Hollywood films, a BBC report stated.

According to it, one of the accused said she was 16 while Brand was 31 at the time of the alleged assault in London.

The literary agency Tavistock Wood, who had been listed as Brand’s representative, told CNN on Saturday that “Brand categorically and vehemently denied the allegation made in 2020, but we now believe we were horribly misled by him. TW has terminated all professional ties to Brand.”

Meanwhile, the actor has denied all allegations levelled against him.

Posting a video on X, Brand said he had received letters from a TV company and newspaper, containing "a litany" of "aggressive attacks".

"Amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute," the actor was quoted as saying in the video.

"These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time when I was in the movies, and as I've written about extensively in my books I was very, very promiscuous," he said.

"Now during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely, always consensual."

After beginning his career as a comedian and later becoming an MTV presenter in the UK, in 2004, Brand gained a role as the host of the television show Big Brother's Big Mouth, a Big Brother spin-off.

In 2007, he had his first major film role in St Trinian's, and the following year he landed a major role in the romantic comedy-drama Forgetting Sarah Marshall; the film led to him starring in a spin-off, the rock comedy Get Him to the Greek, in 2010. Brand also worked as a voice actor in the animated films Despicable Me (2010), Hop (2011), Despicable Me 2 (2013), and Trolls (2016), and played the title character in the remake of the romantic comedy Arthur (2011).

In 2013, he released the successful stand-up special Messiah Complex. He hosted his own radio show The Russell Brand Show (2006–2008, 2010, 2013, 2017) and also hosts the podcasts Stay Free with Russell Brand and Under the Skin with Russell Brand.
