Cannes: Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson earns standing ovation for directorial debut Eleanor the Great

Scarlett Johansson has earned global attention for her acting skills for several years now, but during the ongoing Cannes she added one more feather to her crown when her directorial debut Eleanor the Great was welcomed by movie goers with a standing ovation during its screening in the grand event.

Johansson and her cast received a five-minute standing ovation on Tuesday.

The film had its world premiere at the Un Certain Regard section of the annual festival.

Introducing the film, Johansson said premiering it at Cannes is “really a dream come true", reported Variety.

“When you make a film that’s an independent film like this, no one’s doing it for the money — surprise, surprise,” she said.

“Really, everyone that came together for this film came together because they loved the story, the script so much. It’s a film about many things: it’s about friendship, it’s about grief, it’s about forgiveness. And I think those are all themes that we can use a lot more of these days," the actress said.

The movie stars June Squibb, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Hecht, and Erin Kellyman.

Scarlett Johansson is playing a double duty in the current edition of Cannes since she is part of the cast of Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme.

She had previously appeared in Cannes for Anderson's last film Asteroid City, in 2023.

Two Woody Allen films-“Vicky Cristina Barcelona” in 2008 and “Match Point”- had also made Scarlett Johansson to walk on the Cannes red carpet.
