Lucknow, Mar 18 (IBNS): Raising questions on the freedom of speech and expression by citizens, a Class 11 student has been detained by the police in Uttar Pradesh after he allegedly posted an objectionable comment against Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan on social networking site Facebook.

The Rampur police have booked the boy, a student of Woodrow School in Bareilly district, following a complaint by Azam Khan's media-in charge Fasahat Ali Khan on Sunday.

A court has sent the boy to 14 days of judicial remand.

"I informed the police that this person has posted controversial and inflammatory post in the name of Mr Khan which is a lie. It has hurt the feelings of both Hindus and Muslims and malign Mr Khan's image," the complainant told media.

Even Khan told media that he started receiving threats following the post.

"After his comments were posted on the Facebook, I started receiving threat letters, calls and even threat messages on Facebook," said Khan.

The alleged accused has been booked under the controversial Section 66A of the Information Technology Act (for sending offensive messages through a computer), as well as other sections of the Indian Penal Code including for breach of peace.

His family, however said that the boy merely shared the post and is ready to apologise to the politician.

"During our questioning, the boy told us that he did not understand the real meaning of what he was posting," said Rampur Superintendent of Police Sadhna Goswami.
