Rape victim dies after setting herself on fire in Assam

Guwahati, June 1 (IBNS): A tragic incident has come to light in Assam as a girl working as a domestic help has set fire on herself and succumbed to her injuries after she was repeatedly raped by the house owner's son since the past couple of months.

The incident  took place at Bokakhat town area in Upper Assam’s Golaghat district.

According to the reports, the girl worked as a domestic help at the house of Badan Sarma since a year.

Before dying, the girl said that, Tirtha Sarma, son of Badan Sarma had repeatedly raped her for the past three months.

On May 30, the victim girl had set fire on herself and she was immediately admitted at Bokakhat civil hospital and later she was shifted to Jorhat Medical College hospital in serious condition, where she succumbed to her injuries on May 31.

Following the incident, Golaghat district police arrested the accused person.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Golaghat district Dhrubajyoti Bora said that, the police has already arrested the accused person and a post-mortem has been done on the victim girl.

“Situation got tensed after the arrival of the girl's body at Bokakhat town, but now it is under control. It is a poignant incident and we will investigate it properly,” an Assam cop said.

Meanwhile, local people of Bokakhat town demanded the district administration and police to take stern action against the accused person.

Local people alleged that, Tirtha Sarma had repeatedly raped the girl for the past three months and on May 30, she was again raped by the accused person.

“Following the incident she set herself on fire and later police rescued her in serious condition and immediately admitted at Bokakhat civil hospital. We demand to take stern action against the culprit,” a local woman said.
