PM Modi misused his office by targeting opponents: Manmohan Singh

Bengaluru, May 7 (IBNS): Launching an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his immediate predecessor Dr. Manmohan Singh, has accused the former of misusing his office by targeting his opponents "day in and day out", media reports said.

Singh has been quoted by NDTV, "No prime minister in our country has used the office of prime minister to say things about his opponent the way Mr Modi has been doing day in and day out.... It is very shocking to see the Prime Minister of the country stoop so low and use language and frame ideologies that are unbecoming of a Prime Minister.

"I sincerely hope that Modi learns his lesson and does not polarize the society in Karnataka."

At a press conference in Karnataka, Singh has hit out at the Modi-led government for its "disastrous policies".

Referring to bank frauds, the former PM said: "Perpetrators of these frauds meanwhile escape with impunity. The economic mismanagement of the Modi government, and I say this with great care and responsibility, is slowly eroding the trust of the general public in the banking sector."

"Our farmers are facing an acute crisis, our aspirational youth are not finding opportunities, and the economy is growing below its potential."

The press conference was a part of Congress' election campaign in Karnataka.

Karnataka will go into polls on May 12.

The results will be announced on May 15.

The polls will see bigwigs Yeddyurappa and Siddaramaiah take on one another.

Karnataka is one of the few bastions left ruled by the Congress party.
