PM Modi inaugurates Afghan Parliament building
Kabul, Dec 25 (IBNS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated Afghanistan's new Parliament built by India, report said.
Modi, who arrived early on Friday morning from Moscow after a two-day visit to Russia, will y address a joint session of the two Afghan Houses in the new Parliament building along with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.
The Parliament building project, which was initially conceived at a cost of USD 45 million (Rs. 296 crore), was started by India in 2007 as a mark of friendship and cooperation to help rebuild war-torn Afghanistan. The complex was last estimated to cost Rs. 710 crore in 2008.
The building will house the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House) with a seating capacity of 294, a 190-seat Meshrano Jirga (Upper House), besides other facilities like a conference hall and a press room
Modi was welcomed with a warm hug by President Ghani at the Presidential Palace. "A meeting between friends," the Prime Minister's Office captioned, in a tweet.
The two leaders later held delegation-level talks at the Dilkosha Palace, the Afghan presidential office. They are expected to issue a joint statement later today.
Modi will also meet Afghanistan's Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and former President Hamid Karzai.
