New Delhi, May 30 (IBNS): Former Union Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has been granted an interim protection from arrest in the Aircel- Maxis case by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in New Delhi on Wednesday, media reports said.

The interim protection has been granted after Chidambaram pleaded for an anticipatory bail.

The former union minister has been granted the interim protection till Jun 5, when the next hearing of the case will be held.

Advocate and senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal argued for Chidambaram during the bail plea hearing on Wednesday.

Chidambaram has been accused of granting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to the Rs 3500-crore Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006.

In 2006, Chidambaram was the Finance Minister in Dr. Manmohan Singh government at the Centre.

Chidambaram's son Karti was also arrested in connection to the case.
