New Delhi, Nov 6 (IBNS): Prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday met DMK supremo M.Karunanidhi during his visit to Chennai.

Modi said he enquired about the southern leaders health during the meeting.

Modi tweeted: "Met former Tamil Nadu CM, Thiru M Karunanidhi and enquired about his health. @kalaignar89."

The meeting between the two leaders set  off speculation of a possible alliance ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The PM’s visit comes amid a power tussle within the AIADMK and a day before an “important political announcement” by actor Kamal Haasan.

TV footage showed  the PM with DMK's  working president MK Stalin outside Karunanidhi's residence in Chennai's Gopalapuram.

Stalin welcomed the PM by presenting him  a red shawl. Kanimozhi and Durai Muruga were other top leaders of the party who greeted Modi before his meeting with Karunanidhi.
