TMC under fresh fire as Abhishek Banerjee aide Debraj Chakraborty reportedly detained
Kolkata/IBNS: Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's close aide and former MLA Aditi Munshi's husband, Debraj Chakraborty, was detained by police on Tuesday night, several media reports claimed.
Some reports said Debraj, a former councillor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), is being questioned in connection with multiple corruption allegations.
BJP MLA’s cryptic post sparks speculation
Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Tarunjyoti Tiwari, who defeated Munshi in the 2026 Assembly polls, shared a cryptic Facebook post that many online users linked to the reported police action against Debraj.
Tiwari wrote, “The sins of Rajarhat Gopalpur Assembly are finally gone. There can be no better birthday gift than this.”
Who is Debraj Chakraborty?
Debraj Chakraborty began his political career as a youth Trinamool Congress leader in North 24 Parganas and later served as the personal assistant of former minister Purnendu Bose.
After reportedly being denied poll tickets in multiple elections, Debraj switched to the Congress, which fielded him in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation elections.
Despite winning from Ward No. 7 as a Congress candidate, he later returned to the TMC in the presence of Abhishek Banerjee.
Rise in Bidhannagar politics
Debraj gradually emerged as a powerful TMC organiser in the Bidhannagar area and became known as one of Abhishek Banerjee’s close aides.
His wife, Aditi Munshi, who gained popularity for singing Hindu devotional songs, was fielded by the TMC from the Rajarhat Gopalpur Assembly constituency and won the seat.
However, Munshi was denied a second consecutive term after losing to BJP’s Tarunjyoti Tiwari in the 2026 Assembly elections.
