LS: Good voter turnout in Delhi, UP, J&K
New Delhi, Apr 10 (IBNS): As the third phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections across 11 states and three Union territories ended on Thursday evening, the national capital registered 64 percent voter turnout.
The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday evening said that Delhi recorded 64 percent of electorates turnout till 6 pm.
Meanwhile, the EC said that the riot hit Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh recorded a high turnout of 67.8 percent while Shamli registered 70.55 percent of balloting. Overall, the 10 constituencies of Uttar Pradesh, which went to polls in the third phase witnessed 65 percent of voter turnout, the EC said.
According to the EC, the northern state of Jammu recorded beyond 66 percent, which it said might go up.
The Commission also informed that no untoward incident was reported in these areas.
In this phase, polling was held across 91 Lok Sabha constituencies in Delhi, Kerala, Odisha, western Uttar Pradesh, including riot-hit Muzaffarnagar, Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Vindhya region of Madhya Pradesh, plains of Jammu, Maoist-hit Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Haryana, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
The polling began at 7 am and continued till 6 pm.
High voter turnout was reported in the state of Kerala which registered 73.2 percent balloting on Thursday.
In Odisha, about 67 percent of the electorates exercised their franchise till 5:50 pm.
In the state of Bihar, a total of 50.36 percent voters have cast ballots till 4 pm.
Both Haryana and Chandigarh registered about 60 percent of voter turnout till 4 pm.
About 60 percent of electorates from four Lok Sabha constituencies in Maoists hit Jharkhand have cast their votes till last reports received.
While Madhya Pradesh recorded 46.55 percent balloting till 4:30 pm, polling in 10 seats of Maharashtra recorded about 54 percent voter turnout by 5 pm.
Meanwhile, in Bihar, voting was stopped earlier in day in Jamui parliamentary constituency after at least two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans were killed and three others were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) triggered by Maoists.
Thursday's elections have decided the fate of top leaders like union ministers Kamal Nath, Kapil Sibal, Ajit Singh, former BJP president Nitin Gadkari, retired Army chief General VK Singh, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates Yogendra Yadav, Ashutosh and Shazia Ilmi.
Counting will be held on May 16.
