Kolkata: Patient jumps off 7th floor of a private hospital in Mullick Bazar, critically injured

Kolkata: A patient, who was identified as Sujit Sarkar, was critically wounded after he jumped off the 7th floor of a private hospital in Kolkata's Mullick Bazar area on Saturday.

He jumped from the hospital despite hours of futile efforts to rescue him, official sources told UNI.

A video footage, which went viral, showed the man seconds before falling had attempted to clutch the surface of the cemented wall of the hospital but tumbled out and fell on the ground floor, which was already covered with foam mattresses by the fire brigade personnel.

Sources said he was injured critically and again admitted to the hospital.

Earlier, efforts from the fire brigade personnel using hydraulic ladders for about two hours to bring him down failed because he had threatened to jump if they came close to him.

Even attempts were made to rescue him by calling a relative of the patient. But that too went abortive, sources added.

The patient, who has nervous breakdown syndrome, a resident from Lake Town in the city, was admitted on Wednesday.

Hospital authorities said an inquiry into the incident will be held.

Sujit Karmakar, CEO, Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata, where the incident took place, said: "The patient who jumped off the 7th floor of the hospital building this afternoon, was scheduled to be discharged later today. He was doing well and behaving normal before the incident."

"He suddenly bit a nurse and rushed to the spot from where he attempted to jump and finally fell. He is very critical, has been shifted to ITU. Hospital will conduct an inquiry into the incident," he said.
