Jammu and Kashmir: Flash flood near Amarnath suspends yatra

Srinagar: The Amarnath pilgrimage was temporarily suspended on Tuesday for a brief time following heavy rains near the cave shrine that triggered flash floods, officials said.

The pilgrimage later resumed.

“The weather has improved and pilgrims have started paying obeisance again at the shrine," an official said.

They said heavy rains in the high mountains around the cave triggered flash floods in the water body and surrounding springs at around 3 pm causing panic.

Immediately an alert was sounded and more than 4,000 pilgrims were taken out of the area to safer places.

At least 15 pilgrims were killed and 55 others injured after a cloudburst triggered flash floods near the Amarnath cave hit the tented accommodation of pilgrims and kitchens on July 8.

The total number of pilgrims who have paid obeisance at the cave shrine has risen to 2,72,081.

Kashmir Weather, an independent observatory, has forecast showers on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg routes to the holy cave.
