Himanta Biswa Sarma to become Assam CM

| @indiablooms | May 09, 2021, at 07:28 pm

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma will become the new Chief Minister of Assam, a state where the saffron brigade maintained its dominance in the Assembly polls.

He will replace BJP strongman  Sarbananda Sonowal.

Sonowal had earlier served as the CM of the state for five years.

Biswa was chosen capping speculations over whether he will replace the incumbent chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The ruling BJP-led alliance in Assam created history in the state by becoming the only non-Congress government to win consecutive terms.

Media reports said at the legislature party meeting in Guwahati on Sunday, Sonowal had proposed the name of Sarma after PM Modi gave his nod for Biswa's elevation.

The BJP won the Assembly polls for the second straight term.
