EC denies allegation of large-scale failure of voting machines in ongoing by-elections
New Delhi, May 28 (IBNS): The Election Commission of India has denied allegations of large-scale failure of EVM and VVPATs in the on-going by-elections in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The central Election Commission (EC) in a press release on Monday said that news reports surfacing in the media alleging 'large scale' failure of EVMs and VVPATs in the ongoing by-elections and interruption of poll in the States of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh 'are an exaggerated projection of reality'.
The EC also said that reports of polling being cancelled in 35 booths in 11-Bhandara-Gondiya Parliamentary Constituency in Maharashtra, is not based on facts.
It also said that the reports emerging in some quarters about EVMs/VVPATs failing in 25 per cent polling booths in the same PC are also incorrect.
It clarified that voting has not been cancelled in any polling station in 11-Bhandara-Gondiya PC and voting is continuing smoothly after necessary replacements, where ever required.
Voting in four parliamentary and ten assembly seats across 10 states of the country is underway on Monday.
The four parliamentary constituencies are Bhandara-Gondiya and Palghar in Maharashtra, Nagaland in Nagaland, Kairana in Uttar Pradesh.
The ten assembly constituencies include Palus Kadegaon in Maharashtra, Noorpur in Uttar Pradesh, Jokihat in Bihar, Gomia and Silli in Jharkhand, Chengannur in Kerala, Ampati in Meghalaya, Shahkot in Punjab, Tharali in Uttarakhand and Maheshtala in West Bengal.
The by-poll in Kairana parliamentary constituency of Uttar Pradesh has assumed significance as the opposition have united to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The counting of votes will take place on Thursday.
