Congress flag falls while being unfurled on foundation day

New Delhi/UNI: The Congress faced an embarrassing situation on Tuesday as it celebrated its Foundation Day program, after its flag fell from the pole while being unfurled by party president Sonia Gandhi here on Tuesday.

The flag, known as Swaraj Flag, is a tri-colour with a charkha or spinning wheel in the center designed by Pingali Venkayya.

It was adopted by the Congress as its flag in 1931.

As the Congress president tried to unfurl the flag, it fell from the pole and was caught by Sonia Gandhi herself.

Congress workers rushed to help her, she opened and held the flag for a few seconds, before it was taken by a party worker.

Congress treasurer Pawan Bansal and AICC general secretary KC Venugopal were present next to the flag pole with Sonia Gandhi.

A party worker later climbed up the pole and the flag was hoisted again.
